Christmas Candles

Lighting Christmas candles has been part of tradition for centuries. Since the Roman festival of Saturnalia to the present day Christian masses, candles continue to light our way through the darkness, retaining religious and personal significance.

In ancient times, nearly every home owned candles. The only types of Christmas candle available then came from beeswax or lard. Christmas tree candles came about when a man in the sixteenth century decided to fix tapered candles to the family's Christmas tree in order to show his children how the stars lit the night sky.

Today, candle makers all over the world sell a variety of Christmas candles, from tapered, to votive and tea lights, to specialty designs. Many Christmas novelty candles abound with figures like Santa Claus, his reindeer, Christmas elves, the North Pole Village, nativity mangers, crosses and ornament styles. Novelty candles come from a mold made from clay, silicone, metal, or other hardened materials. Few people hand carve candles straight from hard wax. Hand carved Christmas candles make lovely gifts.

Not all candles presently offered produce real flames. A flameless Christmas candle still has a wax shell, but it uses an LED light to make it glow. Electric Christmas tree candles provide a safer alternative to traditional candles. Christmas window candles come designed to resemble tapered candles. When plugged in to an outlet an oblong LED (light emitting diode) bulb acts as the flame. Red, green, white and clear represent Christmas, but other colors do exist. White electric candles make lovely lights for weddings and wedding parties that take place in the evening hours.

Manufacturers developed a battery powered Christmas window candle for those who dislike the look of cords. Many faux wreaths come with battery powered Christmas candles with bulb included with purchase. A battery powered Christmas candles timer allows users to decide when the candle will turn on and turn off. Battery powered candle timers program one, or a string of different lights. Christmas solar candles use the same idea of going cordless, except instead of batteries solar candles rely on sunlight for energy.

Collectors of vintage candles use Internet auctions and antique seller websites to find nice selections online. Some types of antique candles include a Gurley Christmas candle of Santa Claus, or a limited edition Christmas Wish Yankee candle. Search for sellers of antique candles online, or in phone books.
