Candle Holders

The use of a candle and candle holder for Christmas tree decorations began when a priest in the sixteenth century, by the name of Martin Luther, brought a pine tree into the home and stuck candles to it in order to show his family how it appeared when he viewed the night stars through pine branches.

Of course, Martin Luther could have just taken his children outdoors at night to see the effect with real stars, but this is how many historians claim the first lit Christmas tree began.

In ancient times, Christmas tree candle holders consisted of little more than a candle wired or tied around a tree branch. Later came weighted Christmas tree candle holders. These holders came with a stone, or clay weight that hung from a wire to counterbalance the candle. Some antique shops and online auction sites sell vintage Georg Jensen Christmas candle holders with this design. A Christmas candle holder like this weighed too much for light branches. The candle often tipped over, causing home fires and devastation. People desired a safer Christmas tree candle holder.

In 1879, clip on candle holders for a Christmas tree were invented. The first clip on Christmas tree candle holders held the candle on at a slight angle with a metal base and spring system. They include small discs to catch the hot wax as it melted. While fires still occurred, the clips provided a safer solution than previous holders.

Though electric light strings replaced Christmas tree candle holders for lighting trees people today still use traditional candles in windows, on tabletops and in wall sconces. Candles makers see continued interest in candles and candle holder designs from the simple to elaborate.

Novelty candles and candle holders continue as best sellers, especially the Christmas variety. The Christmas friends candle holder features Santa Claus, a reindeer and an elf with backs pressed against a votive glass as their hands touch. Below them reads, "Merry Christmas". A pewter cross with a winged angel at the center stands among unusual Christmas angel candle holders.

Some candles today come in decorated jars complete with lids. Christmas candle holders toppers often present a 3D designed lid made from clay, porcelain, glass, or pewter. Imagination in Action sells a lovely candle topper of a bird sitting with three birdhouses. Another Christmas candle holder topper resembles a mountain of crystals that light up when turned on.
